Description
Kigali hosted between 20-23 April 2026 the ICAO ESAF/WACAF Annual Environmental Workshop and the EASA 3rd Annual SAF Workshop under the ACT-SAF EU Africa-India Project - Capacity Building for Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) eligible under the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA), implemented by EASA.
Co-organised with ICAO and the Rwanda Civil Aviation Authority, this regional workshop brought together over 80 in-person participants and more than 270 online attendees from across Africa— representing 35 African countries and all types of organisations along the SAF Value Chain (feedstock providers, certifiers, producers, distributors, airport, operators), enablers (Ministries of Transport, Environment, Energy, Petroleum, Agriculture, Finance; Civil Aviation Authorities, Financial Institutions such as EBRD, AFDB, SDSA, SMBC) and other International Organisations (AFCAC, ACAO, AFRAA, ACI-Africa, SASO, CASSOA).
The event went beyond Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF), also addressing key environmental initiatives in civil aviation such as:
• State Action Plans for CO₂ emissions reduction
• CORSIA (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation)
The co-organisation of the workshop with ICAO ESAF and WACAF Regional Offices has been proven a very efficient setup, multiplying visibility, portraying truly collaborative ACT-SAF initiatives, and complementing each organisations’ strengths.
Rwanda and RCAA deserve highest recognition for the resources and efforts dedicated to host the event.
Together, we move closer to a more sustainable future for aviation.
