Certification Director (acting) and Chief Engineer and Safety Advisor — Alain Leroy

Alain Leroy was appointed Acting Certification Director for EASA on January 1, 2026.

Alain LeroyLeroy has been the Agency’s Chief Engineer since 2021, leading the Technical Line of experts and advising the EASA Executive Director. He took on the additional role of Safety Advisor in January 2025.

After graduating as a French aeronautical engineer and pilot, Leroy joined the Délégation Générale pour l’Armement, working on future aircraft concepts. After several assignments in the Direction Générale de l’Aviation Civile, he spent ten years at the Joint Aviation Authorities, developing the European joint certification system.

After one year at Sofréavia, a French consulting company, where he was heading the airworthiness and operational branch, he joined EASA in 2004 as Head of Product Certification. He was nominated Head of the Large Airplane Department before becoming Deputy Certification Director.

Leroy is an active pilot, competing as a member of the French aerobatic team in the early 90s, and in the first World Aerobatic Glider championships. He still owns a single seater Pitts aerobatic airplane..
