ALBATROS Webinar: Dissemination of the first large-scale European study on in-flight turbulence using Data4Safety
In-flight turbulence remains a significant aviation safety risk, particularly due to its potential to cause injuries to passengers and cabin crew and to generate operational disruption. As part of the EU-funded ALBATROS research action, this webinar will present the results of a pioneering European study on in-flight turbulence, delivered with the support of EASA’s Data4Safety (D4S) platform.
This work marks a first of its kind: it is the first time the Data4Safety platform has been used to support European aviation safety research under Horizon Europe, and it has enabled the first study of this nature and scale on turbulence in Europe.
The study draws on an innovative combination of safety data sources, including the full European Central Repository (ECR) occurrence reporting database and more than 4.4 million in-service flight recordings from six European operators. By fusing these complementary datasets and applying advanced data analytics and AI-based safety analysis and risk modelling, the study provides an unprecedented evidence base for understanding turbulence risk in European aviation.
During the webinar, the ALBATROS team will present how this unique dataset has been used to:
• Characterise the frequency, distribution and operational context of turbulence encounters in Europe;
• Analyse links between turbulence events, injuries, and other safety and operational consequences;
• Identify patterns and contributing factors that support a more refined understanding of turbulence-related risk.
The webinar will place particular emphasis on turbulence risk characterisation, highlighting the innovative analytical approach and the value of large-scale data fusion for aviation safety research. It will also outline how this work can support future efforts to further improve turbulence risk management.
This dissemination event offers a unique opportunity to discover how ALBATROS is advancing European aviation safety research through cutting-edge use of operational and occurrence data.
