The EASA Guidelines for allowing virtual classroom instruction and distance learning are addressed to competent authorities and aviation training providers subject to Regulation (EU) No 1178/2011 on aircrew and Regulation (EU) No 965/2012 on air operations.
The Guidelines have been comprehensively revised following the experience gained during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as with information from relevant studies and developments in the use of virtual classroom instruction and distance learning. They recognise that these training methods are now established within many training programmes and provide a framework for their consistent and effective implementation.
The overall purpose of the Guidelines is to support the safe, effective and consistent delivery of training in accordance with applicable Regulation.
The Guidelines:
- provide guidance to training providers on the use of virtual classroom instruction and distance learning for the delivery of theoretical training in accordance with the applicable training programme and regulatory requirements;
- support competent authorities in the consistent oversight and evaluation of these training methods;
- identify the main benefits, limitations and specific risks associated with virtual classroom instruction and distance learning; and
- provide an implementation framework covering training effectiveness, instructor and trainee responsibilities, equipment, attendance, assessment, risk management and oversight.
