The EASA CO2 Emissions Database provides CO2 metric values for aeroplanes as certified by EASA. These values are established in compliance with the ICAO Aeroplane CO2 emissions standard contained in ICAO Annex 16 Volume III.
The CO2 metric value is determined during CO2 certification of an aeroplane. It is a specific air range (SAR)-based metric adjusted to take into account fuselage size. The CO2 metric value aims at measuring the technology performance of an aircraft type with respect to its fuel efficiency. During certification, it is compared to the applicable CO2 limit as defined in ICAO Annex 16 Volume III.
Certification to the ICAO CO2 standard is generally required for jet aeroplanes of greater than 5.7 t maximum take-off mass (MTOM) and propeller-driven aeroplanes of greater than 8.6 t MTOM, with applicability as follows:
- From January 1, 2020 for new designs of subsonic aeroplanes, including their derived versions, with the exception of jet aeroplanes with 19 seats or less;
- From January 1, 2023 for derived versions of non-CO2 certified aeroplanes, and new designs of jet aeroplanes with 19 seats or less;
- From January 1, 2028 for all in-production aeroplanes.

The publication of the EASA Aeroplane CO2 Emissions Database fulfils the requirement from ICAO Annex 16 Volume III, Part II, Chapter 1.9 that the certificating authority shall publish the certified CO2 emissions evaluation metric value granted or validated by that authority.
