OBJECTIVES
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Council regularly adopts new Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs) in Volumes I, II and III of Annex 16 to the Chicago Convention (ICAO Annex 16). These SARPs are usually based on the recommendations put forward by the ICAO Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection (CAEP).
Article 9(2) of Regulation (EU) 2018/1139 sets out the essential requirements for environmental protection that refer to the requirements contained in Volumes I, II and III of ICAO Annex 16.
The purpose of this rulemaking task (RMT) is to update:
- Article 9(2) of Regulation (EU) 2018/1139 with the latest amendment levels of Volumes I, II and III of ICAO Annex 16;
- Regulation (EU) No 748/2012, to ensure the consistent implementation of the applicable environmental protection requirements for the certification or declaration of compliance of products; and
- the related acceptable means of compliance and guidance material.
This RMT is expected to provide a level playing field for all stakeholders in the aviation market.
The objective is to maintain a high uniform level of environmental protection and to contribute to European policies on climate change, air quality and noise reduction.
This RMT is a permanent vehicle to address newly adopted SARPs in Volumes I, II and III of ICAO Annex 16.
