Description
Further to the recent rapid expansion in industry interest in the use of Additive Manufacturing (AM) methods in aviation products, EASA has been working, in conjunction with industry and other regulators, to find the most efficient means by which future regulation of the technology and its applications can be achieved. EASA has communicated this message through its initial AM Certification Memo, and the EASA AM Workshops held in 2016 and 2017, supported by some more local Workshop activities. This approach is aligned with the developing EASA EPAS (European Plan for Aviation Safety) and the Level of Involvement (LOI) strategies.
AM potentially requires more integrated technology knowledge throughout design, production, and maintenance activities than conventional technologies. However, the developing global business models is spreading industry functions across the globe. Therefore, it is becoming increasingly important for industry and the regulators to communicate more in order to improve and share their understanding.
Considering the points above, this Workshop will be potentially beneficial to both global industry and the regulators, hopefully leading to the opening of communication paths and improved knowledge transfer such that safe and efficient certification becomes possible.
