Related to the EASA General Aviation Road Map, the Agency is working on Rulemaking Task RMT.0674, entitled ‘Revision of the European operational rules for balloons’. The major goal is to establish simpler, ‘lighter’ and better rules for air operations with balloons. The Agency plans to finalise this task until the first quarter 2016 (EASA Opinion).

The Agency is not planning, as usual, to publish a Notice of Proposed Amendment (NPA) for consulting interested parties. Instead, the Agency is organising a one-day workshop for focussed consultation to discuss the draft revised rules. The workshop is dedicated to balloon operators, manufacturers and competent authorities.

During the workshop the envisaged new operational rules for balloons will be discussed in depth. Therefore, the workshop is not meant to address the wider public, but is dedicated to specialists who contribute actively to the specific air operational issues of discussion. The Agency plans to provide the participants with the draft rules prior to the workshop for giving them the opportunity to prepare for the event.
