Correct wind information is essential to flight crews in assessing aircraft performances and limitations for take-off and landing phases. Following a serious incident involving a commercial transport aircraft EASA launched the NGW project in order to perform a comprehensive survey and analysis of the existing technological means and techniques for the detection of near-ground wind gusts in the context of large aircraft operations and flight instrument procedures. The issues owing to the appropriate interpretation and use of wind gust data by flight crews for critical decision-making during approach and landing were also addressed.
