Carbon Monoxide (CO) Hazards and Mitigations in Aircraft Exhaust Systems

Promoted in the EASA Community to the benefit of safety.

Carbon Monoxide Hazards and Mitigations in Aircraft Exhaust Systems | by FAA Safety Briefing | Sep, 2024 | Medium

On this beautiful day, you completed an uneventful engine runup, takeoff and were just starting to appreciate the joys of flying, when a voice in your head starts saying something is wrong and your carbon monoxide (CO) detector starts sounding off.

Because of the alert, you find a landing zone and touch down safely, shortening an otherwise perfect flight, but saving the day.

FAAST Carbone Monoxide - September 2024

Since 2010, there have been 12 fatal aircraft accidents in the US due to CO impairment.

The General Aviation Joint Safety Committee (GAJSC) recommends increasing CO risk awareness and installing a CO detector.

  • Do you have a CO detector installed in your aircraft, or carry one on board with you when you fly?

  • Do you thoroughly inspect your exhaust system every 100 hours?

Even if the number of CO intoxication related occurrences is relatively low in Europe, these checks will equally benefit to European GA pilots.
