The latest Aviaze lessons learned is about a pilot who suddenly lost of propeller in flight - how would you react in such a situation?
An experienced 40-year-old pilot was carrying out a ferry flight of a Moth Major in Spain in 1984. Suddenly, he heard a “BANG”. He immediately closed the throttle, could the cylinder head had exploded?! Well, not really... the propeller flew away... In this case, the pilot didn't notice it. Trying to land became a bit tricky since the plane didn't slow down as usual, due the lack of propeller resistance. Take into account these Lessons Learned and share it with other pilots ?✈️ ?✈️
The key lessons are:
- Maintenance check flights are critical - if possible, perform them as local flights in case there is a problem.
- In case of a total power loss know where the wind is coming from, find the airfield, build a traffic pattern and avoid zigzagging when close to the ground.
- Don't panic - gliders fly without engines all the time.
