January's Dirty Dozen is Complacency

Familiarity can lull us into a false sense of security. If we have a sense of overconfidence or routine this can lead us to act the way we think we should and not specifically the right way for the situation.

Complacency

What you can do to guard against complacency?

Aviation is mostly a very process driven industry and normally things go exactly the way we expected and planned it. This makes it even more difficult to be always on the look out for threats, hazards and the potential for error.

Here some things you and your organisation can do:

  • Expect to find errors, always be alive to the threats and risk in any situation.
  • Use checklists and procedures every time.
  • Don’t sign for it if you didn’t do it.
  • Embrace learning - share experiences in your organisation.

What are your experiences of compacency, do you have any examples or stories you would like to share with us and the wider aviation community? Add something in the comments below or contact us at safetypromotion@easa.europa.eu.

When a junior share concerns openly by "Challenging the Routine" by questioning in my part of the world it is not normally appreciated by their seniors.
