Hi guys, how about use ATPL theoretical course as CPL theory requirement to teach PPL not only LAPL. There is no difference between PPL and LAPL except instrument time if I'm right.

Hi,
could someone give his comments about guidance signs inside airport, airside?
I think that:
e.g. inside "Figure N-2G. No-entry sign", I have to understand that the 2 lateral spaces "H" are as "at least" and not as precise measures;
the same is for e.g. "Figure N-3. Sign dimensions" part A "H/2" as "at least" and part B "H" as "at least".
This interpretation is as per ICAO A.D.M part 4 (search for "at least"), para 12.2.6, "...The width is determined by the overall length of the inscription, to which must be added a border of at least 0.5 times the inscription height at either end of the sign.". The same info is always included in all the editions of UK CAP168.
A different interpretation could be that the manufacturer has to procude any single lenght of structures of the signs. In my opinion this interpretation is not technically feasable for the producer, mainly for lighted signs producer.

I've been refused my group 3 endorsment, where a large part of the practical experience was gained with my existing B1.2 licence (lots of tasks are common to the B1.2 and B2) because I was not "supervised", so I don't think FAA experience gained the same way would make it work. The point is, regulation and AMCs as they are written are almost impossible to meet, or, I'd rather think, made to protect the bosses of the avionic shops , so they, and only them, can have a licence, or the person they choose to grant one, for instance if they sell their business when they retire. And also, this helps to keep the wages of the employees low, as they can not go away and work on their own., and also helps them to control competition ...(no other shop can open, without a licenced person...). Keeping margins high, seems to be the priority, rather than safety, reason why lots of small flying clubs use aged avionics, and can not upgrade their planes with modern stuff.

Hi Paolo, this is a very good idea and it is also something that we currently discuss internally. Apart from participating and raising awareness about initiatives like ECCSA, we are currently in the prepatory phase of a number of other activities that will take place in 2024 and info-sharing activities is a part of this agenda. In memory of David Cockburn, The Honourable Company of Air Pilots, formerly the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators (GAPAN)
David Cockburn passed away in January 2024.
I had the privilege to work with him in the European General Aviation Safety Team (EGAST) co-chaired by John Vincent and then Dominique Roland, and James Black.
EGAST closed in 2016 and safety promotion was then transferred to the EASA GA Advisory Bodies, with many other roles to perform.
This is a picture of my personal copy of the pre-series dated 2017 of the GAPAN EASA PPL(A) Instructor's lesson Guide, co-authored by David.
David Cockburn was a fine gentleman, a passionate aviator and an inspired writer.
He will be remembered.
My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

To be honest i'm still don't feel safe as a passeggeri if i continue to read about bad practices (Just want to avoid worst expression) and people that admited that the manual and instructions should be updated!!?🤔🤔🤔 So i'm wondering if we're kidding as we're talking about and airplane with 100 and more passengers on the board and their lives that should be safe since the departure untill arrival,then after the famous words SAFETY FIRST,we can put on the tablet standards,policies, directives,technical comitees,Federal institutions etc.As a Quality Expert with a long experience in automotive behind some declarations i really don't know in what to still believe...market Is a master over and beyond any other thing and even AI Will not be able to change this kind of approach that Is on one hand very sad on other Is very frightening

Advice for helicopter pilots in harsh winter conditions

Norway is a demanding country for helicopter operations. There are many factors involved during the winter season. Icing, white-out, snow landing, weather, flameout, fuel, starting in cold weather, parking outside, skids stuck to the ground, frozen ground and more.

To avoid white-out it’s important to:
1. Avoid flying at low altitude over snow covered surfaces without prober references.
2. Do not fly into heavy snow showers.
3. If it’s not possible to see the difference between ground and horizon, turn around or land.
Different technics may be used to reduce the risk of entering self-induced white-out conditions:
1. If possible, stop in high hover and try to blow the snow away. Be aware of different snow types, and that the snow may start to recirculate suddenly when the helicopter is close to the ground.
2. Do not attempt to land if there is no object you can use as a reference during landing.
3. Perform a fast approach with a slightly forward movement and avoid low hovering.
4. Turn the nose of the helicopter, so the reference is visible at all time and fly close to it.
5. Make use of landing lights.
6. At take-off, lift the helicopter slowly to light on skids. If white out conditions occur land immediately, if not a max performance take off shall be performed with a slightly forward movement and always keep a point as a reference. Avoid hovering.
