PEDS can cause deadly distractions

Caution - Distraction can lead notably to CFIT, MAC and cable or obstacle collision accidents. It has to be properly avoided or managed.

You have probably watched the two EASA videos reminded below with Mathieu Vandenavenne but have you watched this video with Andy Rowles from the Rotorcraft Collective?

The Rotorcraft Collective is a group of engineers, pilots, mechanics, accident investigators, and communication specialists from industry and the FAA who produce short safety videos packed with information on topics such as preflight inspections and passenger briefings, helicopter icing, and securing cargo.

Randy Rowles, President of the Helicopter Institute, is also member of the USHST.

PEDs Can Cause Deadly Distractions (The Rotorcraft Collective)

Using a portable electronic device while flying can be distracting

Nonessential usage adds risk to your flight. The discussion in this video is not about the legality of using these devices in the cockpit; it's about when and under what circumstances to properly use them. Using an electronic flight bag for navigation is common these days, but it, too, can cause a distraction severe enough to wreck the situational awareness it's supposed to enhance. Watch this video for some tips on managing the use of portable electronic devices to a reasonable level.

To avoid distraction from PEDs:

  • Be thorough in preflight planning.
  • Have a routine for searching your PED.
  • Develop contingencies before you take off.
  • Pilot proficiency includes using your PED.
  • Know your keystrokes by practicing on the ground.
  • Avoid calls, texts, and emails with Airplane Mode.
  • Stow your PED to avoid dropping it in flight.
  • Have a paper or elelctronic backup of nav info.
  • Limit PED use to safety of flight une only.
