Safety at stake

In Europe, the safety of over 1000 flights a year is threatened by unruly or disruptive behaviour of passengers on board.  Every three hours an incident occurs within the European Union. More than 70% of events involving disruptive passengers lead to physical violence.  At least once a month the situation on board escalates to such a point that the flight has to make an emergency landing.

Every passenger and cabin crew members deserves the right to a safe flight, free of violence and other behaviours that might put them at risk.

This is why EASA has partnered with organisations from across the aviation community to raise awareness of the risk posed by disruptive behaviour. Unruly behaviour will not be tolerated especially when safety is at stake.

Smoking, Alcohol, Physical Violence

There are three main types of unruly behaviour:

  1. Excessive consumption of alcohol : Analysis of safety occurrences has identified that a major cause of unruly passenger events involve excessive drinking.
  2. Smoking: Another cause is related to passengers smoking at the aircraft and their refusal to comply with the safety instructions.
  3. Physical Violence: A considerable number of events involve physical violence either between passengers or towards cabin or flight crew.  Many of these are also induced by alcohol but others are stress related.

Show respect

To raise awareness of the problem of unruly passengers EASA has joined forces with major organisations across the aviation community. Together we want to encourage a long term change in the mind-set of passengers that such behaviour is socially unacceptable in the modern world.
Travelling should be an enjoyable experience where passengers treat each other and the cabin crew with the respect that they deserve.

The launch of the #notonmyflight campaign seeks to encourage the whole aviation community including passengers to get behind this common goal.

There are many ways to engage on this topic. We can share some of our ideas and our pool of posts. Just contact us via campaigns [at] easa.europa.eu (campaigns[at]easa[dot]europa[dot]eu)
