Description
Manual piloting skills in the whole flight envelope has always been a pre-requisite for safe operation of aircraft. Recent incidents and accidents where flying at high altitude in adverse weather conditions is considered a contributing factor in the causal chain raised concerns and corresponding safety recommendations have been addressed to EASA by the investigating authorities.
During the past five years, numerous actions have been taken to enhance awareness of the aviation community about the importance of training in adverse and unusual situations. However, some inadequate flying patterns are still being identified and need to be further addressed.
At the same time, during the past decades considerable efforts have been invested in research and development of mitigating measures concerning weather phenomena. There is still room for further development and deployment of novel technologies to make the aviation system even less vulnerable to extreme weather events.
EASA is organising a workshop dedicated to “Flying at high altitude in adverse weather conditions”. This workshop is intended to assess the potential for aviation safety benefits that could result from enhancing and developing specific trainings at for high altitude flight, providing enhanced weather information essentially to for pilots in the cockpit and enhancing aircraft on-board systems and sensors. It will also consider the impact of system failures in relation to human performance.
This workshop is addressing European National Aviation Authorities OPS, FCL and NSC representatives, Training Organisation representatives and aircraft manufacturer representatives.
The draft Agenda will be constantly updated as topics and speakers are confirmed.
