Air Traffic covers a complex system that assist all aircraft:

  • in flight; or
  • operating on an aerodrome.

Air Traffic Management and Air Navigation Services (ATM/ANS)

The safe and efficient management of the Air Traffic in Europe consists of harmonised Air Traffic Management and Air Navigation Services (ATM/ANS) that include

  • air traffic services
  • communication services
  • navigation services and
  • surveillance services
  • meteorological services for air navigation and
  • aeronautical information services; as well as
    • air traffic flow management
    • airspace management
    • network management functions
    • flight procedures design and
    • aeronautical database services for the purpose of air navigation

EASA’s role in Air Traffic Management and Air Navigation Services

  • proposes European rules and standards and conducts standardisation visits to check compliance and uniform implementation  of these measures in the area of ATM/ANS
  • certifies and oversees organisations such as:
  • ATM/ANS organisations providing pan-European services such as e.g. Network Manager
ATM/ANS organisations located outside the EU and providing services within the territory of the EU
  • Air Traffic Controller (ATCO) training organisations located outside the EU and, where relevant, their personnel, and providing training for EU ATCOs.

  • coordinates activities to address aviation cybersecurity risks and interdependencies between safety and security (e.g. Conflict Zones)
