What is it all about?

The European Aviation Safety Agency, located in Cologne, operates a traineeship programme that provides opportunities for traineeships in all parts of the organisation. The programme gives trainees an understanding of the Agency and its role within the activities of the European Union.

A traineeship at the Agency is an opportunity to receive professional work experience in a distinctly multinational and intellectually stimulating environment, while contributing to the Agency's mission of promoting the highest common standards of safety and environmental protection in civil aviation in Europe and worldwide.

Who can apply?

The programme is aimed at young university graduates who have completed at least three years of university education and at students who have completed at least two years of university studies and intend to do a voluntary or mandatory traineeship. Placements for university graduates are offered for a period of up to 6 months, placements for students are offered for a period of up to 3 months to a maximum of up to 6 months.

Applicants must be nationals of a Member State of the European Union or nationals of Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Switzerland.

Successful candidates will usually have a background that is relevant to the activities of the Agency.

Typical examples include:

  • Civil aviation, Aeronautics, Engineering;
  • Qualified lawyers with an interest in aviation regulatory affairs;
  • Qualified candidates with an interest in Human Resources, Finance, Project management, Information technologies, Communications, Public Relations and International Relations.

Minimum requirements

  • Have a very good knowledge of English and at least one other Community language
  • Have completed at least two years of University studies

How to apply?

EASA publishes traineeship notices twice per year:

  Spring call Autumn call
Publication of call April/May September/October
Start of traineeship September/October February/March

The call for the spring 2013 session is closed on 31/01/2013. New traineeship notices for the autumn 2013 term shall be published in May/June 2013.

Selection procedure

We establish a list of eligible and suitable applicants whose applications, and in particular, educational background, qualifications, competences, motivations and preferences suit best the identified needs in accordance with the availability of places.

Before a final decision is taken candidates are tested over the phone to check availability, suitability, linguistic knowledge and to discuss reciprocal expectations. The telephone interview is held in English.

Finally, the Agency’s Executive Director selects the trainees based on the list of suitable applicants and on the number of places available. Selected candidates are informed in writing and receive all necessary information concerning the traineeship.

Traineeship grant

The Agency pays a monthly grant plus a travel allowance for travel expenses incurred at the beginning and end of the traineeship. You can find more information about financial matters in the FAQs and our traineeship rules.
